Blog Entry #4

Mohism and Legalism are two opposite ends of the road when it comes to how to govern. Legalist officials believes that to maintain order that you must have a strong ruler with harsh punishments. They think that wars are a way of strengthening power to the ruler which is not true at all. They also think that the right way to govern is to only have laws and you have to be educated and that a perfect society would be if everyone was in order. Mohism on the other hand has totally opposite views. They believe that a good way to govern is if the ruler is wise. They don't make people join their religion or put any pressure onto them. They think that if people are truly good at heart that they will find their way into Mohism. They wanted to have a country of universal love and cooperation amongst people. They thought that the government and the society only needed math and science and no music or arts. Even though I do not agree with the laws of Legalism, they seem liked they maintained order more than the Mohists because the Mohists were free willed and very down to earth which would make the people of the society not want to follow their laws because they don't believe in harsh punishments and the people would take of advantage of that. Legalists on the other hand go by the book. They are strict and straight forward and have harsh punishments. So this is a better way in maintaining order because the citizens are more likely to be scared and intimidated by the ruler and they wont want to get in any trouble so they follow the laws and regulations that the ruler instructs.
